Best RC Cars for Beginners in 2026

Buying your first hobby-grade RC car in 2026 is easier than ever, and more confusing too. Most big brands sell "ready-to-run" (RTR) models, but ready-to-run does not always mean ready to drive. Many popular trucks ship without a battery or charger, so the price on the box is not what you will actually spend.

This year there is also a big change at the top of the market. In June 2026 Traxxas announced a new brushless power system for its best-known 1/10 trucks. ARRMA's popular 3S line now carries the "223S" name. So older buying guides may point you at models that have been replaced.

This guide sorts current beginner-friendly models by budget and type. For each one it says what comes in the box, and it shows how to work out the all-in cost before you check out.

First, a few terms

• RTR (ready-to-run): built at the factory, with electronics and radio installed. A battery and charger may or may not be included.
• Brushed vs. brushless: brushless is usually faster and needs less maintenance; brushed is cheaper and simpler.
• 2S / 3S: the number of LiPo cells in series. Traxxas lists 2S as 7.4 V nominal and 3S as 11.1 V.
• NiMH vs. LiPo: LiPo packs store more energy than NiMH but need a LiPo balance charger and careful handling.
• Scale (1/10, 1/16, 1/18): approximate size. 1/10 is full-size for hobby cars; 1/16 and 1/18 are smaller.

What changed in 2026

Traxxas: Velineon 3s replaces VXL and BL-2s on the classic 1/10 trucks

On June 19, 2026, Traxxas announced the Velineon 3s Brushless Power System, which pairs a new VX3 speed control with a Velineon V3200 brushless motor. The press release named five models: Rustler 2WD (37454-4), Rustler 4X4 (67464-4), Slash 2WD (58434-4), Slash 4X4 (68454-4) and Stampede 4X4 (67454-4). RC Driver separately reported a Stampede 2WD Brushless (136454-4) with the same V3200 motor.

Two things to know:

1. The speed numbers don't match across sources. The press release promises "60+ mph" on 3S LiPo. The Slash 4X4 Brushless and Stampede 4X4 Brushless product pages say "35+ mph with 2s LiPo battery, 50+ mph with 3s." The pages we checked don't explain the gap, so treat 50+ mph on 3S as the product-page claim.
2. These models don't run on NiMH. The Slash 4X4 and Stampede 4X4 Brushless pages list 2S or 3S LiPo only, with the battery and charger sold separately.

ARRMA: "223S" is the new name for the 3S bashers

The ARRMA 1/10 Granite, Big Rock, Senton and Vorteks, and the 1/14 Typhon Grom, now ship as 223S versions that run on 2S or 3S. The 1/10 models use a Spektrum 3100 Kv motor and a Spektrum SLT 80A 2-in-1 speed control and receiver with DSC.

Best beginner RC cars by budget

Under $200: small, simple, and complete

These are the gentlest starting points. The Gorgon is a full 1/10 monster truck, and its NiMH pack avoids LiPo handling on day one. Horizon's page says it is also 2S LiPo compatible if you want more speed later.

$200 to $300: the sweet spot for most first-timers

Our picks in this range:

• Losi Mini-T 2.0 2S if you want a small, brushless stadium truck with everything included. Horizon's page lists no speed claim, so don't buy it expecting a particular number.
• Traxxas Slash 2WD XL-5 with battery if you want a full-size 1/10 short-course truck and a NiMH battery. Traxxas rates it skill level 1.
• Traxxas Mini Maxx BL-2s for a smaller brushless monster truck that includes a LiPo and charger. It is also skill level 1.

$300 to $450: full-size brushless (battery and charger usually extra)

These are classic "basher" trucks for jumping and all-round driving. Traxxas rates the new Stampede 4X4 Brushless as skill level 1, so Traxxas considers it beginner-friendly despite its speed. One tip: you don't have to use all of that speed right away. Some Traxxas speed controls, such as the VXL-6s, offer an EZ-Set Training mode that limits throttle to 50%, according to Traxxas. Check your model's manual to see whether its speed control has one.

Cheaper ARRMA 223S options also exist. The Fury DSC 223S short-course truck lists at $249.99 and the Gorgon 223S at $259.99, both with "50+ MPH" claims. Check each listing for what's included.

Budget brushless from direct-to-consumer brands

Some lower-cost brands now include a LiPo and charger with brushless cars. Independent reviewers have measured two of them:

• MJX Hyper Go 14209 (1/14): Big Squid RC reviewed it at $178 with a 2S 3000 mAh LiPo and USB charger included. It measured 26 mph on the stock 2S pack (method not stated) and called it a truck that "looks good, drives well, has good power, and can take a beating." QuadifyRC's 2023 review reported a higher 46–50 km/h (about 29–31 mph) on 2S depending on the surface, so measurements vary.
• Rlaarlo Storm Breaker SBK10 (1/10 buggy): Big Squid RC reviewed it at $219 with a 3S 2200 mAh LiPo included. It measured 28 mph on that stock pack and called it "arguably the best 10th scaler basher" it had tested.

The trade-off is parts support: QuadifyRC's MJX reviews noted that spares were listed on Banggood, so check parts availability before you buy.

Working out the all-in cost

The sticker price is only the start when a battery and charger aren't included. Here is an example using list prices from Horizon Hobby's and Spektrum's sites as of September 17, 2026:

Compare that with an included-battery model like the Traxxas Slash 2WD XL-5 with battery at $259.95, and the gap is bigger than the sticker prices suggest.

Before you buy a separate battery and charger, check these things:

• Connector match: the battery plug has to fit the vehicle's connector. Confirm on both product pages.
• Charger compatibility: Spektrum says its G2 Smart packs require a Spektrum Smart charger with G2 firmware. Traxxas iD chargers read Traxxas iD packs automatically.
• Cell count: make sure the charger supports your battery (2S, 3S and so on) and the vehicle is rated for it. Horizon Hobby warns that using an incompatible battery "could potentially fry your electronics."
• Chemistry: Traxxas says to "NEVER charge a LiPo battery using a NiMH charger" or a NiMH mode.

What to watch out for

• "RTR" isn't a promise that a battery is included. Read the "in the box" or "requires" line. The Slash 2WD Brushless listing says plainly: "Requires: Batteries & Charger."
• Speed claims have conditions. Traxxas's biggest numbers often need "optional gearing" and a "3s LiPo battery (items sold separately)." ARRMA uses wording like "speed potential." Our top-speed article explains why real speeds are often lower.
• Starting too big. 6S and 8S trucks such as the Traxxas X-Maxx ($1,199.95, skill level 6) are not first-car material by Traxxas's own rating.
• Skipping LiPo safety. Traxxas tells owners to charge LiPo packs with a LiPo balance charger in a fire-retardant or fireproof container, and to turn on the speed control's low-voltage detection. That feature warns you when a cell drops below 3.2 V.
• Kids and LiPo. Traxxas's Mini Maxx manual says the model "is not intended for use by children under 18 years of age without the supervision of a responsible and knowledgeable adult." Always drive away from people, pets and roads.

What is the best RC car for a complete beginner?

For most people, a model that includes a battery and charger, such as the Losi Mini-T 2.0 2S ($229.99), Traxxas Slash 2WD XL-5 with battery ($259.95) or Traxxas Mini Maxx BL-2s ($289.95). All three are ready to drive once the battery is charged. Traxxas rates the Slash XL-5 and Mini Maxx at skill level 1.

Is the new Traxxas Slash 4X4 Brushless good for beginners?

It can be, with the right expectations. It lists at $429.95, runs on 2S or 3S LiPo only, and doesn't include a battery or charger. Starting on 2S (claimed 35+ mph) keeps things more manageable, and a throttle-limiting mode helps if your speed control has one.

Should my first RC car be brushed or brushless?
