Binding, calibration and failsafe: verify the safe state

Binding, ESC calibration and failsafe configuration are three different jobs. A receiver can be bound while throttle calibration is wrong, and a normally driving car can still have an unverified response to signal loss. Keep separate records so one green light is not mistaken for a complete safety check.

Prepare a controlled bench test

Confirm the exact transmitter, receiver and ESC manuals, channel assignments and compatible power arrangement. Disconnect power while fitting plugs. Put the vehicle on a stable stand that cannot tip, keep driven wheels clear and stand away from tyres and drivetrain. Never hold the car while testing throttle.

Bind by the receiver’s own method

Procedures differ. Spektrum’s SR315 page specifies a bind button and describes SmartSafe and Preset Gas failsafe options for that receiver. Spektrum SR315 support. Follow the exact sequence and control positions for the installed receiver; do not transplant a plug, button or LED routine from another model. Record the receiver indication and control positions used during binding.

Calibrate the ESC separately

Binding establishes the radio link. ESC calibration, when required, teaches that ESC the relevant transmitter positions using its own documented routine. Check radio model memory and trims first, then follow only the installed ESC’s sequence. Tone and light patterns are model-specific. Use the minimum inputs requested, and stop immediately if the drivetrain moves unexpectedly or the indication differs from the manual.

Prove the stated failsafe

Write down the receiver maker’s promised behavior before testing it. Spektrum’s SR315 page describes SmartSafe and Preset Gas as different options; Preset Gas allows channel positions to be programmed. Record which mode is selected and confirm its required control positions in the receiver manual instead of assuming that a mode name guarantees the response you want. Starting from neutral on the restrained stand, follow the receiver manual’s signal-loss test method exactly. If it directs switching off the transmitter, do that only in the stated order. Observe receiver indication, throttle and steering without touching the vehicle. Restore the link as directed, power down, disconnect the battery and write the observed result next to the promised result.

Treat differences as failures to explain

Do not drive if throttle moves unexpectedly, the ESC arms unpredictably, steering behavior differs from the chosen mode or an LED pattern is unexplained. Repeat documentation checks before repeating a powered test. After any receiver reset, model-memory change or failsafe-mode change, treat the previous result as obsolete and run the documented restrained verification again.

Manufacturer support should receive the exact model numbers, settings and observation. Never test signal loss by driving away from the transmitter; a restrained, manual-defined test answers the safety question without turning it into a runaway experiment.
